The recurring "ribbon" motif on building facades emphasizes horizontality, often manifested as balconies or shaded horizontal elements. This concept resonates with one of Le Corbusier's Five Points of Modern Architecture. Le Corbusier's vision entailed utilizing concrete pillars to liberate facades from structural loads, enabling continuous horizontal windows to illuminate interior spaces uniformly.
While Hadar HaCarmel buildings employed concrete construction, economic constraints often necessitated retaining load-bearing facades. Additionally, the hot Israeli climate prompted local architects to reduce window sizes for solar control. Consequently, the "ribbon" element in Hadar HaCarmel received a distinct interpretation. Here, the "ribbon" manifests not as continuous horizontal windows, but rather as longitudinal balconies that cast expansive shadows and sometimes create a visual ribbon effect on the facades.
