The Talpiot Market Building represents the peak of creativity and activity of the people of the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood.
Due to the Great Arab Revolt, the Jews living in the neighborhood did not feel safe buying in the Arab markets. The Hadar HaCarmel Committee, with the permission of the British Mandate, decided to establish an independent Jewish market in the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood.
In 1937, the neighborhood committee announced a public competition for planning the market. About 100 architects participated in the competition, and finally, M.Gerstel and engineer K. Cohen won.
The market was designed as a large structure containing stalls and a protected piazza illuminated by a mosaic of glass bricks on the roof of the market building.
The building consists of distinct prisms which are wrapped in "Brise Soleil" that emphasize the element "ribbon". The prisms are organized symmetrically to empower the building's sense of pridefulness but may also, be a bridge that connects to the Arab tradition of building that is also reflected in the hybrid structures.
